A UK, South West based TV software specialist gained over €430,000 of EU funding with the support of Enterprise Europe Network South West.

Based in Bristol, Ocean Blue Software is an award winning digital TV software specialist, providing the most comprehensive support services to the digital TV industry. Ocean Blue Software contacted Enterprise Europe Network South West (EEN SW) in early 2013 to enquire about access to the European Research & Development fund, Eurostars. Eurostars is a programme that supports research-performing small and medium enterprises, which develop innovative products, processes and services, to gain international competitive advantage. Eurostars does this by providing funding for transnational innovation projects; the products of which are then rapidly commercialised. The project is aimed at creating and deploying a pan European Hybrid (Broadcast and IP) middleware stack for Connected TVs and set-top boxes. The project was successfully funded to the value of €430,840. Ocean Blue Software collaborated with a leading German software development company, GmbH and this successful collaboration has helped them to access new technologies and new markets.

CABSAT & TV Connect 2014

In 2014, EKT has exhibited again at CABSAT in Dubai and just one week later on the TV Connect in London.

In Dubai we have exhibited together with MyHD and presented the MyHD-SMART-STB, a single tuner DVB-S hybrid STB with embedded cardless IRDETO and wifi support. The hybrid Set-Top-Box is powered on an Entropic SoC ARM Cortex A9 chip. The STB access in the IP range, in addition to YouTube contents from the Middle Eastern provider Selevision.

The simple well-designed housing in aluminum look with soft-touch-key sensors completes the picture.

On the TV Connect in London, we have presented the world our first version of a Power Plug Form Factor STB. In addition to the new Form Factor, which was very well received among the visitors, our solidTV middleware solution was focused.

Winker: Lateinamerika lockt

Furtwangen. Christof Winker darf sich berechtigte Hoffnungen machen, mit seiner Firma ein richtiger Global Player zu werden. Am gestrigen Dienstag hat er zwei Mustergeräte nach Madrid geschickt. Dort ist der Sitz des Telefongiganten Telefónica, bei dem Winker schon einen Fuß in der Tür hat.

Seit Juli bietet die Telefónica-Marke O2 ihren Kunden in Tschechien eine Box an, die zusätzliche Komfortmerkmale beim Fernsehen bietet. “Damit kann man das Fernsehprogramm übers Internet auch zeitversetzt sehen, also Beiträge, die bereits gesendet wurden”, sagt Winker. “Zudem können sich die Kunden Videos aktueller Filme ausleihen”, ergänzt er. Und zwar so, dass ein Kopierschutz garantiert ist. Möglich macht dies das Sicherungssystem DRM von Microsoft. “Jemand der diese Box nicht hat, kommt nicht dran”, sagt Winker.

Bleibt abschließend zu bemerken, dass diese Box von Winkers Firma entwickelt wurde. Das hat etwa ein Jahr gedauert, während dessen die 20 Furtwanger Mitarbeiter dieses Gerät bis zur Marktreife gebracht haben.

Nicht ohne Stolz bemerkt Winker, dass sich damit gegen einen Mitbewerber durchgesetzt hat. Im Rahmen der Ausschreibung habe man die Firma Motorola “aus dem Rennen geworfen”.

Wie kommt nun eine vergleichsweise kleine Firma aus dem oberen Bregtal mit einem weltweit tätigen Konzern ins Geschäft? Zum einen, sagt Winker, würden bei Messen Kontakte geknüpft. Im vorliegenden Fall war es so, dass Winker im Jahr 2010 ein Pilotprojekt für die Swisscom (Schweiz) übernommen habe. Auf diesem Weg sei ein Dialog mit Telefónica entstanden.

Und mit dieser Konzern hofft Christof Winker, nun noch größer ins Geschäft zu kommen. Am Dienstag hat er zwei Muster der Box, wie sie in Tschechien bereits auf dem Markt ist, auf den Weg in die Konzernzentrale gebracht. Es geht um nichts weniger als darum, dass sich damit eine gewisse Hoffnung macht, dieses Gerät in absehbarer Zeit auch für Argentinien, Brasilien, Chile und Peru produzieren zu dürfen, wo Telefónica groß im Geschäft ist.

EKT and merge to bring Hybrid, IPTV and OTT to a broader market

IBC 2012 in Amsterdam

nullAt IBC 2012 in Amsterdam showed the result of the intensive cooperation work with in Czech Republic.
This demonstrated a seamless integration of HLS streams from the head end into a DVB-S2 channel list giving a fully seamless Hybrid EPG.
This is based on our new wrapper with makes the complete middleware available from a high level API such as  JavaScript, and we have the same available for QML as well.
We were based on a Houseboat with our hardware partner Eagle Kingdom, where we made  presentations to a stream of interested customers. Entropic also showed our new solidUI DVB (C/T/T2/S2) Wrapper based on the latest version of QML with certain hardware accelerations at their IBC Suite.

The company presented a complete UI abstraction, realised based on NOKIA QT- QML, using the DVB- Stack from Ocean Blue Software in Bristol. In business association with Ocean Blue Software created QT- wrapper for all functions. Using these wrappers,’s developers are able to modify SOLID-UI in short term based on an abstract developer level or provide the source code to a customer for his own modifications.

In parallel, NOKIA Qt optimized’s DirectFB 2D and 3D layers for a real hardware acceleration which easily can be used for any kind of graphical effects. was able to establish new business contacts and got a bigger contract completion. During the positive course of the IPTV 2012, GmbH already booked a new trade-show booth for the IPTV 2013, in London.
